DIY Checklist

Before you enthusiastically dive into your next DIY project, it's important to consider the following factors before getting down and dirty:

  • Time: Most of us are pressed for time as it is, so adding more to our plates might not be the best approach to take. Consider your schedule and how long the project might take. Don't think it will take you the same amount of time it takes a pro to finish the job.
  • Skill: A lot of do-it-yourselfers enjoy getting their hands dirty for a number of reasons, not the least of which is cost. A successful DIY project will cost less than hiring a contractor. However, if your skill level isn't up to the task, you'll end up spending significantly more money (not to mention time) in the long run.
  • Money: While a successful DIY project will save you money, much of those savings are rooted in the free labor (in this case, your own). Materials can be costly. Establish a budget before you begin the project and stick to it. A good money-saving tip is to approach a project in pieces. For example, if you're re-doing a bathroom, handle the sink or shower or toilet first, and finish the project piecemeal from there on out.
